Using AI Prompting to Enhance and Tailor a Resume

Using AI prompts to improve my resumes helped me take my original resume (which was general and broad) and turn it into two resumes that actually fit the industries I’m aiming for. My first resume listed my jobs and responsibilities, but it didn’t really highlight the skills that make me a strong candidate for individual career fields/jobs . By prompting the AI, I was able to rewrite my experience in a way that better shows what I can do, like focusing on guest relations and communication for hospitality, or branding and content skills for marketing.

Changing the prompts also showed me how much the wording can shift depending on who the resume is for. Hospitality needs warmer, service-based language, while marketing needs more creative, results-focused phrasing. It taught me how important it is to tailor your message to the audience, because the same job experience can sound totally different depending on how you frame it.

The one negative of using AI to tailor a resume is that some parts of the resume were lost (e.g. dates) and some words/design features came out a bit scrambled. In the future I will be using AI prompting as a suggestion then edit my resume myself in order to prevent these mishaps.

Overall, using AI made me better at understanding what employers look for and how to present my background in the strongest way. It also showed me how helpful prompting can be when you want to refine your voice, adjust tone, or make your documents stand out.
